Spin

Letters to the Editor

Columbus Dispatch,

On Thursday’s editorial page you cite the delay people experienced logging on the websites to sign up for ObamaCare as evidence that the law was “poorly conceived.”  That’s your take on it.

The official goal was to have 7 million people sign up for the new health insurance during the initial 6-month enrollment period.

But on that first day alone more than 10 million people tried to log on to the various exchange websites.

As Tony Pugh wrote in his article on your front page Thursday, 4.7 million visited healthcare.gov alone.

My take is that, while many wanted to get straight talk without the partisan spin, no one realized how wildly popular ObamaCare would be.

The Repubs are only talking and listening to one another right now, just like the were doing throughout the 2012 election.  Because they are only listening to themselves and others like them, whenever they are confronted with facts that conflict with their set of beliefs, they go into a state of cognitive dissonance and are unable to process the information.  I’m pretty confident that the owners of the Dispatch are dealing with this condition, big time.

Incidentally, you can tell when people enter the state of cognitive dissonance, by observing their eyes become “set back” and lapse into a “blank stare”. Their face often becomes blank while they quite often say little or nothing.  You’ll recognize the signs immediately, if you know what to observe.
